Running is beneficial to one’s health at every age, including after 60. This is because running improves aerobic and cardiovascular body functions as well as bone and muscle density, staving off diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and cancer.
So how can seniors who are not active take to running safely? The trick is to start slowly. Rather than setting off for the track on their first day, they can kick things off with a walking program to build muscle and endurance. Once they are comfortable walking, they can increase the distance they have to cover and slowly progress into jogging, and then running.
That’s not all. To keep fit while running, they should perform strength training exercises with light dumbbells to strengthen their core muscles. They should also stretch before and after running to improve joint flexibility and give their bodies adequate recovery time between runs to avoid injury.
